Grupo Empresarial Ángeles
Corporate group with Mexican capital, which besides its participation in the communication media sector has also important investments in different buisness sectors such as tourism, health and finance throughout the whole country.
Grupo Empresarial Ángeles has a long business history, from private hospitals and rehabilitation centers to restaurants and luxurious hotels, including leasing and financial insurance companies.
In 2003, the conglomerate purchased Grupo Imagen, with which it entered into the media business. It acquired various radio stations and among them Radioactivo 98.5, one very popular station among the Mexican youth because it offered programmes with alternative music althoug later it transformed into a news station. Three laters later, the Group bought the daily newspaper Excélsior and its internet portal. Finally, in 2013 it launched its own open TV channel, Excélsior TV.
After all these actions “… Grupo Imagen Multimedia on the Avenue Universidad in Mexico City constructed the building where today have their seats Imagen Televisión, Imagen Radio and the newspaper Periódico Excélsior; it is the first Mexican conglomerate that owns printed media, radio and television…”, according to a document from the Federal Institute for Telecommunications from December 2016.
The presence in the media sector of Grupo Empresarial Ángeles has also an important impact for acquiring contracts for government publicity: a report from Fundar - Mexican Center for Analysis and Investigation shows that the group earned 385 millions of pesos in 2016.
The journalist Marco Lara Klahr, coauthor of the book "Los Amos de México" (The masters of Mexico), qualified the founder of Grupo Empresarial Ángeles, Olegario Vázquez Raña, as a skilled businessman who became successful due to its persistence but also due to its “proximity to the government“, especially with the former Mexican presidents Ernesto Zedillo and Vicente Fox.
