Grupo Reforma

Grupo Reforma

With newspapers covering the largest cities in the country such as Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara, Grupo Reforma is considered as the second major company for printed media in Mexico, after Organización Editorial Mexicana.

Since the 1920s the Junco de la Vega family has been involved in the media business. In 1922 Rodolfo Junco de la Vega founded his first newspaper, El Sol, in Monterrey. After El Sol, the family founded the newspaper El Norte in 1938, aslo in Monterrey; years later Reforma in 1993 and Metro in 1997 appeared in Mexico City; Mural was founded in 1998 in Guadalajara and Palabra in Saltillo in 1997 - the last one is not in circulation since 2008.

During the time when the founder Rodolfo Junco de la Vega Voigt was in charge of the newspapers, they had conservative editorial policy aligned with the economic interests of the businessmen from the north fo the country. Actually, there was a sort of partnership with the magnate Luis G. Sada from the Cuauhtémoc Brewery, who was involved in the edition of the publications making sure they don't harm his interests, or the interests of other affiliated businessmen or politicians.

However, when the journalist and grandson of Junco de la Vega Voigt - Alejandro Junco de la Vega González - came to be the manager of Grupo Reforma, the newspapers of this editorial were considered as the most impartial in the country.

Junco de la Vega is being directly tied up with businessmen, journalists and governors from the State of Nuevo León such as Fernando Canales Clariond and Fernando Elizondo, both of them belonging to the conservative party PAN (National Action Party), while the latter is also his relative. He is friend of Ted Cruz - former potential presidential candidate for USA from the Republican Party.
