El Universal
The history of El Universal is related with the political history of Mexico. It was founded in 1916 to echo the tenets of the Mexican Revolution in the time when the Constituent Congress was called to establish the Magna Carta in 1917. His founder, Félix Fulgencio Palavicini - an engineer from the State of Tabasco, Mexico, resigned as the manager of the media to dedicate himself fully to the political career. That is how in 1923 Miguel Lanz Duret became the Director of the media; his family until today participates in the management of El Universal.
During Enrique Peña Nieto's term, El Universal was known for having a conservative and pro-government editorial policy. A report from Fundar - center for analysis and investigation from Mexico - showed that this is one of the media that get most government advertising contracts: in 2016, it received 240 millions of Mexican pesos. In July 2017, six columnists resigned their publishing space because El Universal was against the establishment of the National Anticorruption System.
