Organización Editorial Mexicana S.A de C.V

Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM) has 70 newspapers, 24 broadcasters and 43 websites, including one news agency (Informex). Besides Estudios Tepeyac, which pools together the radio stations, OEM has companies in other sectors such as the paper sector (Cartones Ponderosa, Productora Nacional de Papel,) publicity (Espectaculares Televisivos de Alta Definición, company that makes publicity for high-definition) and transport (Comercial Fletera México).
The closeness of OEM with the PRI political party was always very obvious. Actually, during the presidency of Luis Echeverría (1970- 1976) it was said that the President was partner with the Vázquez Raña brothers. This closeness was also evidenced in 2012 when the then presidential candiate Enrique Peña Nieto was booed and rejected by the students from the Ibero-American University. The next day, the newsapers from OEM had the headlines: "Success for Peña Nieto after the orchestrated intent for boycott". This provoked the student movement #YoSoy132, which demanded for media transparency since some media such as the ones of Vázquez Raña were wrongfully assuring that the protesters were not even students at the Ibero-American University.
The history of OEM starts with the visionary García Valseca (1901-1982), media magnate who in the 1940s with the help of politicians from the State of Puebla such as the governor, Maximilio Ávila, starts his empire of newpapers by acquiring El Sol and the sports daily Esto. At the end of the 1960s, and due to economic debt, the media network of García Valseca was nationalized, and named OEM. In 1972, this media organization is privatized again and sold to Mario Vázquez Raña.
The empire of Mario Vázquez Raña started growing by accident initiating with selling furniture. His brother Olegario Vázquez Raña is the owner of Grupo Empresarial Ángeles and of the media group Grupo Imagen - which on the other hand owns the daily newspaper Excélsior. When Mario Vázquez Raña died, his wealth was inherited by his wife Paquita, the actual owner of Organización Editorial Mexicana (OEM). Other members of the family, son-in-laws and grandsons are the ones that have the managing positions at the OEM.
